DIY Painted Ornaments

DIY Painted Ornaments by Gold Standard Workshop

If you’re looking to create some beautiful ornaments that don’t require a lot of work, you’ve come to the right place! This project is super simple and besides buying ornaments, you probably have everything else hanging around your house. I wanted to paint ceramic ornaments last year but couldn’t find them anywhere. I did find a couple of styles that would have been suitable for painting, including frosted white glass and some beautiful mini black glass ones, but I really love the heavy, slightly uneven look of the ceramic. And I’m a sucker for the gold tops. I scored a set of four at Hobby Lobby at 50% off recently and was super excited to get to work.

Since I’m obsessed with mint and gold, I had to do that. And I really love how they turned out!

Materials
  • Glass or ceramic ornaments (I found mine at Hobby Lobby)
  • Glitter (I used Martha Stewart Glitter in Smoky Quartz)
  • Paint (I used Martha Stewart Satin in Cloud and Metallic in Gold)
  • Small paintbrush
  • Soft medium paintbrush (for brushing excess glitter off ornament)
  • Floral foam (optional) Note: I would have benefitted from floral foam because you could stick the ornament top into it and allow the ornament to dry without the risk of ruining your design
  • Mod Podge
Basic Idea

Wash your ornaments with soap and water.  Simply paint your designs on the ornament and let dry. Depending on the paint you use, you may have to apply several coats. This is where floral foam would come in handy for drying. You could also set the ornament on top of a glass with a smaller mouth.

If you want to use glitter, draw your designs in Mod Podge, cover with glitter, let dry. Once dry, brush off excess glitter with soft bristled paintbrush. Being the craft ADD person I am, I didn’t wait long enough for the paint to dry before I applied the glitter. So there’s glitter permanently stuck outside the lines. It’s driving me crazy. But I’m living with it.
