DIY Glitter Boots

DIY Glitter Boots: Gold Standard Workshop

I’m so excited for these DIY glitter boots!! I’ve been wanting to make them for months. Months, I tell you. But I couldn’t find the right boots. I looked at Goodwill, Ross, TJ Maxx, Target, and all over online. I finally found some at Target (part of their new fall boot collection) a few weeks ago. I scooped them up for $34.99. Not super cheap, but they were closer to what I wanted than anything else I’d seen and I knew I had to get them (and hey–Target is having a BOGO sale right now online!) I love how they turned out and I’m excited to show you how to make them!!!

Materials

DIY Glitter Boot Tutorial / Gold Standard Workshop

  • Boots, any color. Look for a pair that has a smooth back so the glitter will adhere.
  • Mod Podge
  • Glitter, any color. I looked at all types of glitter and decided I wanted glass glitter because it’s chunky. I used one jar.
  • Clear spray varnish
  • Paintbrush or foam brush
  • Disposable container for glitter glue mix–one with a lid would be ideal
  • Acrylic paint that matches your glitter. I used this Martha Stewart paint.
  • Painter’s tape. I love Frog Tape.
  • Newspaper to cover your working surface and your boots. You will also want a piece small piece that will lay underneath the glitter so you can reuse the excess.
Basic Idea
  • Tape off the area you want to glitter with painter’s tape. Be vigilant about sealing off the edges so paint/glitter will not seep through. The boots I chose worked well because the zippers on both sides created a natural line.

  • Paint the area you want to glitter the same color as glitter. This will really help the boots look nice if glitter falls off. Let dry. One coat worked for me.

  • Pour glue and glitter into the disposable container and mix well.  The ratio should be 50/50. Apply a thin layer of glue to the area with your paintbrush or foam brush. Let dry for about one hour–you want to make sure each layer is completely dry.
    • NOTE: A paintbrush worked better for me because I was able to get into small corners with ease. The first layer will look lame and the glitter very sparse. That’s ok!

  • Continue applying the glue glitter mix in layers. The glue will look white and thick but dry clear. Make sure you allow enough time for the layers to dry before adding another one.

  • With your third layer, only apply the glue mix to half of the boot. Immediately after adding this layer, take your glitter and shake it generously over the boot. Let dry for 15 minutes before shaking off excess. Do the same with the other half of your boot. Make sure the glitter covers the entire area.
  •  Apply one thin coat of glue (no mixture) over the entire glitter area. Let dry.
    • NOTE: You will notice that it’s difficult to cover the area with a thin later due to the bumpiness of the glitter. Do the best you can and then be patient and let the layer dry for least an hour. It will dry clear. Patience is key here, buddy.

  • Cover the entire boot minus the glittered area with newspaper. Spray with several coats of clear varnish; let dry thoroughly between coats. (And spray in a ventilated area!!)

  • Carefully remove the painter’s tape from the boot. This might be a little tricky. I had a thick layer of glue around most of the boot and it doesn’t just peel away.
    • TIP: Mod Podge is slightly stretchy so when you pull the tape away, it might stretch but it won’t crack. Use small pointed scissors and trim away the excess glue using the boot edge as a guide.
  • That’s it!! It’s not a difficult project, but it does take some patience and time. I completed these over a weekend. I’ve worn them a few times and the glitter has stayed on with no issues.

Admire your hard glittery work!! Pick glitter out your ears and nose. Find glitter around your house for the next 6 weeks. Go to work and have people comment on unexplained sparkles on your cheek.
